Traveling From the USA to Croatia? Rent a Motorcycle and Explore It in a Unique Way
If this is your first time considering a trip to Croatia that includes an unforgettable motorcycle ride, don’t worry; we will lead you through everything you need to know, step by step. First of all, we want to say a few words about the country itself. Croatia is a coastal European country, overlooking the beauties of Italy on one side and bordering the valleys of Hungary on the other. Due to its huge number of important historical sites and outstanding natural beauties, millions of tourists from all over the world visit this country every year.
The country is a mixture of Mediterranean Italian-like sites, and in the north, the middle European scenery is as you can see in Austria, Hungary, or Slovakia. However, there are other reasons for this country’s large touristic popularity. The warmth and hospitality of the locals play a huge role here, bringing thousands of tourists back every season. You would need just a couple of hours here to see how that local welcoming spirit is present in the local cuisine, the vibe in the streets, hospitality, humor, and locals’ love for a good time, relaxation, music, culture, and arts.
After Croatia became a popular spot for filming numerous famous TV series and movies, you can see more and more celebrities each year choosing Croatia for vacationing, chilling on their yachts, or exploring ancient historical monuments. Now, if you wish to be one of those millions of tourists in Croatia, let us explain to you how to get there, how to look for accommodation, and most importantly, what to keep in mind when renting a motorcycle for your scenic ride in this wonderful country.
Getting to Croatia Is Easier Than You Might Think
So, first things first – you don’t have to worry about logistics – Croatia has multiple international airports and even has a direct flight from New York to Dubrovnik. Also, it’s easy to find connecting flights from other European cities. One of the most popular options is from Frankfurt Airport in Germany. By the way, if you are feeling adventurous, you can reach Croatia by boat from Italy or Greece. Also, it’s important to mention that Croatia is a part of Schengen, which means that you are allowed to stay in Croatia for 90 days in a six-month period.
Finding a Great Place to Stay Is Even Easier
Now, as for accommodation, Croatia has a vast variety of choices, ranging from luxury hotels and villas to more affordable apartments or rooms. Here, you don’t have to worry about language or cultural barriers when booking your accommodation. The majority of Croatian people speak very good English, and the rest can surely manage a simple conversation. Of course, a higher level of English knowledge is especially present among those who work in hospitality. Also, Croatians are friendly towards people from all corners of the world, so you should always be open about asking for help or advice in hotels, restaurants, or resorts. Now, this goes especially with us – our friendly Rent-a-GS team can’t wait to assist a fellow biker.
However, bear in mind that Croatia is a very popular tourist destination, so make sure to book your room in advance. After you book your accommodation, remember to pack the adapter for all your devices, such as laptops, phones, and tablets. The voltage in outlets in Croatia is around 22 volts, unlike in the States. Also, tap water here is safe to drink, so you can use the tap water in your room for drinking, washing fruit, and cooking.
Croatia Is Not Just Beautiful but Also One of the Safest Countries in the World
In addition to friendliness, good wine, good time, breathtaking coastal line, and fairytale-like islands, tourists like Croatia for one more important reason. Croatia keeps rating year after year as one of the safest countries in the European Union, and in the world. Crime rates here are extremely low, especially for serious crimes such as assaults, home invasions or grand thefts. There is also no violence on the streets or large gatherings such as music festivals or club parties.
Besides having low crime rates, Croatian people are very into cultural monuments, preservation, eco-friendliness, and the protection of animal rights. The most unpleasant thing you can encounter here is friends in a pub arguing about who is going to pay the check. Now, if you make some Croatian friends here, don’t be surprised if you get some drinks for free. Also, remember that Croatians are fun-loving people who like to party, so get ready to experience some exciting nightlife.
Now, a few tips about paying in restaurants and cafes in Croatia. So, if you are in a fancy restaurant, you definitely can pay with your card, but if you are in some tiny cafe, newsstand, or bakery, you will most likely need to pay in cash. Just bear in mind that you should always keep some euros in your pocket while in Croatia. Regardless of your payment method, when you are ready to cover the bill, you will have to call the waiter – servers here don’t come to your table often because they don’t want to disturb your meal.
Also, waiters don’t like to ask you if you are ready to pay; to them, it would look rude, like they are hurrying you up. So if you need anything from the waiter, feel free to raise your hand and invite them. Also, tipping here is common but not mandatory. People usually tip just to “round up” the bill or to express gratitude for exceptional services. So, you can tip if you have some extra cash withdrawn; if not, nobody’s going to bat an eye. What Can You Expect as a Biker – Let’s Compare Roads in the USA and Roads in Croatia
Now, let’s explore some unique driving rules in Croatia. It’s crucial to understand that turning right on a red light is strictly forbidden here. Equally important, never attempt to turn left over a double lane. These rules, different from those in the States, are not just about avoiding fines, but also about ensuring your safety and that of others. Remember, the speed limit on the highway in Croatia is 130 km/h (about 80 miles per hour).
So, let’s learn something about the differences between American and Croatian roads. American roads became a symbol of freedom through many iconic movies due to their size, emptiness, and outstanding length. You can be riding for thousands of miles without making a turn or getting into a more serious traffic jam. These kinds of roads became in everyone’s mind a metaphor for relaxation, free spirit, and meditative ride. However, with Croatian roads, things are a lot different – it’s pure excitement all around!
First of all, coastal roads are narrow and full of curves, with surroundings that are constantly changing! On your one side, there will be a rocky hill; on the other, the divine-like sea, and before you, a sudden curve that will set that spark right through your veins. Riding down the coastal road in Croatia is an unforgettable experience – you have adrenaline, the scent of the sea, beautiful nature, and a refreshing breeze carrying the spirit of Medirenaian vegetation. You will smell the enticing mixture of pine trees and salty sea while bypassing forests, ancient ruins, castles, and cheerful fellow riders.
Things You Can Visit While Staying in Croatia
Now, after your wonderful ride is over, you can pick how to spend the rest of your day. You can take a dip into the sea, dine in some of the amazing local restaurants, or go for a peaceful camping in nature. After a long day on the road, you would enjoy unwinding on a yacht – who knows! From urban outings, cultural exploration, secluded rest in nature, and exciting nights out, Croatia has something to offer for everyone’s taste. Also, if you make some new friends during your stay here, don’t be surprised if they ask you for your Whatsapp or Viber account—people here almost never use SMS texting anymore. Also, many popular public places and cafes offer free WiFi, so you don’t have to worry about catching up with your friends in the States anytime you like.
If you are planning to visit some national parks, museums, or galleries, please inform us about the working hours and rules of the institution on their websites in advance. Some places like these can easily be overbooked and tickets sold out. Also, some institutions have strict regulations about the dress code and similar rules. Make sure to check all of that in advance. Also, if you would like to hear our advice on how to spend the rest of your vacation in Croatia, you can always send us an email or message us.
