It was declared a national park in 1961 due to its exceptional beauty and cultural significance but also because this unique landscape reflects conditions during prehistoric times when these lakes were formed by glacial meltwater flowing down through cracks created by erosion caused by glaciers retreating at end of Pleistocene Age some 20 000 years ago during Ice Age period between 10 000 BC – 6000 BC).

Which roads to ride and what to Keep in mind before you start?
When you rent your bike have in mind that it’s a different climate in Split than in National Park there can be and 10-celsius difference on the same day so bring some extra layers of clothes. In our office, we provide motorcycle rental gear such as protective jackets, helmets, and protective pants.
If you rent a motorbike in Split stop for lunch and visit some beautiful places on the way to Plitvice, Just pull over and enjoy yourself! We recommend making 2 days trip so you can fully enjoy exceptional mounting roads in an easy and slow mode ride. From Split, you have 3 hour ride to your destination and then a minimum of 3, to 4 hours walking in the beautiful national park Plitvice. Keep in mind if you going for a one-day trip (we don’t recommend this) that you start as early as possible. so you need to count the time to rest, eat, visit, and stop sightseeing, after all, you will be a little bit tired so count on that that you start returning in reasonable hours.
We recommend that you ride to Plitvice nation park with D1 state road which is passing by inland country this is the best way to enjoy curvy roads on the motorbike and skip the highway Near Plitvica you can check the Airbase Željava which was the largest underground airport and military air base in the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (SFRY), and one of the largest in Europe. Find accommodation near Plitvice Nation park and rest there.
On the way back, we always recommend the road through the mounting of Velebit and visiting beautiful villages Kuterevo where you can visit bear sanctuary and Krasno village, and then by the Karlobag ride most scenic coastal road in Europe, you can also visit on the way Zadar or Skardin beautiful little village in Canyon of Krka river. Nearby is Krka Nation Park which is also beautiful to explore by motorcycle.
